In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative. Wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required' or 'No improvement' as the answer.

'Laid down' means 'stated authoritatively'. 'Laid up' is 'stored up' or 'confined to bed'. 'Lead someone up something' is to guide someone upward along some route. 'Lead someone down' is to help someone down (stairs, a path, etc.).

Answer: (d)

'Need' here is a noun and it means 'necessity arising from existing circumstances'.
